Genetic Modification (GM)

Genetically Modified Foods

A significant amount of crops in the United States, especially wheat, soy, and corn are genetically modified. Fruits and vegetables can be as well but many recent studies have shown that virtually all wheat, soy, and corn have been altered.

What are the health problems associated with GM foods?

At this time there have been no strong studies to suggest if GM foods are dangerous. Right now, we are all the experiment. I for one do not wish to be in this experiment, so I avoid these products.

Maybe someday it will turn out it is harmless or it could turn out to be the most dangerous thing to ever have happen to our food.

How can GM foods be avoided?

Luckily, a guideline for labeling a food as organic is for it to not be genetically modified.

Anything that is certified organic will be safe in this case.

Look out for ingredients in processed foods such as “modified corn starch” or “altered” something.

-Movie theater popcorn: likely from GM corn
-Bread at cheap restaurants: likely from GM wheat
-Non organic soybean oil: likely from GM soy

These patterns can be continued with so many other products (corn chips, breadsticks, cornbread)

Buying organic is really the only way to stay away from GM foods.
